Cannabis Sativa is a vastly misunderstood and underused plant. Once more famous for its psychoactive properties, more and people are realising that there is a lot more to hemp than simply getting high.

Hemp is astonishingly diverse has been used throughout history for wearing, building, washing, eating….the possibilities are seemingly endless. Rope, car parts, biodegrade plastic, paper, clothing, shampoo…..from insulating homes to making nutritious smoothies. Used from seed to stem hemp is a truly sustainable natural resource.

Hemp is a very hardy plant; it grows like a weed which is where the slang term for cannabis comes from. The hemp plant does not need pesticides and herbicides and requires far less water than other plants. Hemp is a relatively fast crop with a hundred day turn around and can be grown in a variety of climates and soil types. Hemp can even be grown on poor soil which it actually improves.

Hemp can also be used to purify soil, air, and water, it is being grown to clean contaminants at the Chernobyl nuclear disaster sight.

While industrial hemp fibres from the stem are used to make fabric and paper, the oil from the seeds has a whole other heap of benefits.

Hemp seed oil is considered one of the most nutritiously balanced supplements you can take. As well as improving the immune system, cardiovascular health and brain development, hemp is rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals and high in omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids.

Hemp seed oil really helps your skin from the inside, it is a fantastic treatment for skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

Used topically hemp is an extremely effective, yet gentle moisturiser, containing key amino acids and vitamins known to prevent dryness and wrinkles, while rejuvenating skin. Hemp oil hydrates without clogging pours, while balancing and regulating your skins natural oils.

The hemp seed oil is a particularly important part of what makes our range so special. Thanks to the ultra-moisturising qualities your skin is left soft and hydrated.

We get a lot of positive feedback about our soap; thanks to the hemp it doesn’t dry out your hands like many soaps can. We are all doing a lot more hand washing at the moment, so this is very appreciated.

The lotions and creams are absorbed quickly and easily and are kind enough be used on even very sensitive skin and children.

Does CBD oil expire?

post image running on hempty

The answer to this question is yes . It does take a while though .

The shelf life of unopened cbd is easily 2 years  plus . Once opened it should ideally be kept in the fridge this gives it much longer . You should look after your bottle by cleaning the dropper and neck of the bottle regularly. If you do this and keep it out of direct sunlight or heat  it can be fine for 12-14 months or maybe longer .   Most people who use it on a daily basis will never get to its expiry date as you replenish it with a new bottle every 4-8 weeks .

You want to avoid bacterial clumps forming this will happen if you leave it somewhere hot or in direct sunlight. Having it in coloured glass bottles helps to keep the oil protected from light .

Buying from a good source is also key . You know your product is in top condition when you get it as it’s been tested many times before it reaches you.

cannabinoid oils  can change colour . These colour shifts do not indicate an issue it’s the plant compounds and you can see pink , rose and sometimes shades of brown or even darker they react to light . This is why it’s best to keep your bottle out of light and somewhere cool preferably the fridge to avoid any unwanted bacteria forming .
All our cbd is of the highest quality tested and by a third party . Lab reports are available.

What are they?

These are potent, organic elements that occur in plants. They provide incredible smells, delicious flavours and therapeutic benefits to the fruits you love, the forests you’ve explored, and now the hemp products you use too bring health and wellness.

How does this relate to CBD?

CBD is a therapeutic compound that occurs in the Hemp plant. Hemp gives off a powerful scent, this scent is a result of the terpene content found within the Hemp flower. Cannabis has a pungent smell, as does Hemp. The scent comes from Myrcene, one of the most common Hemp terpenes, CBD rich Hemp strains contain complex mixtures of terpene compounds. They range from piney and earthy to floral and fruity. The different combinations of terpenes can influence the body and mind in unique ways. There are over 20,000 terpenes that have been identified in the natural world. Cannabis and Hemp have roughly 100. These are the common Hemp terpene:

  • Myrcene (musk & cloves)
  • Linalool (floral & spice)
  • Pinene (pine & sweet)
  • Caryophyllene (wood & spice)
  • Humulene (earthy)
  • Limonene (citrus)
  • Ocimene (floral)
  • Bisabolol (sweet & floral)

Each of the above also occur in other plants, here are some examples:

  • Myrcene: Lemongrass, citrus
  • Linolool: Lavender, citrus, rosewood
  • Pinene: Conifer, trees, pine
  • Caryophyllene: Basil, black pepper, oregano
  • Humulene: Hops, basil
  • Limonene: Lemons, peppermint
  • Ocimene: Mandarin, basil, peppermint
  • Bisabolol: Basil, chamomile, cedar wood

Terpene Benefits

  • Myrcene is a potent anti-inflammatory compound. It also can be sedating, relaxing and can help aid sleep.
  • Linalool relieves stress and depressive symptoms. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and helps reduce pain.
  • Pinene has neuroprotective properties helping memory and it has anti-microbial effects, this can help fight bacteria and fungal cells and also reduces inflammation.
  • Caryophyllene shows promise in assisting cancer treatments, it also fights inflammation and reduces pain.
  • Humulene, another potent anti-inflammatory, shines in the treatment of allergic asthma symptoms.
  • Limonene is a great mood elevator, and studies have found it to be more effective than common anti-depressants. It is also capable of balancing hormone levels within the human system.
  • Ocimene is one of the significant elements of natural plants that provide anti-oxidants, anti-proliferative (inhibits cell growth, tumours) and anti-inflammatory.
  • Bisabolol reduces pain and is helpful in pain management.

so from this information, you can see why CBD, the other commands and Terpenes together offer great benefits for so many common ailments that we experience.

why choose hemp

CBD and your Dog

B6F4F1AE 2DEE 4A20 ABB5 AC136965FD7A

Dogs are a massive part of many peoples lives. These cheerful canines bring great joy, fun and companionship, however owning a pet also brings worry and issues with old age and illness. Its hard to see your fury friend suffer with chronic illness, pain, discomfort and disease. Dogs are prone to many of the same ailments and diseases as us humans such as anxiety, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, epilepsy and general pain and discomfort. Many struggle to do basic activities like climbing stairs due to old age. Have you felt like there are only few ways to help them? Have you looked into trying CBD oil?

CBD (cannabidiol oil) is a liquid extracted from Hemp plants. Recently becoming well-known for its therapeutic qualities. Not to be confused with THC also found in Hemp but is known for its psychoactive elements. CBD will not get your pet high. It has been shown to have various positive effects, such as calming anxiety, pain relief and inflammation, and even lessoning frequency of seizures, aiding sleep and cancer.

After centuries of experimentation and use on humans, CBD oil has entered the animal market. It is very important that you should not give CBD with any THC in. At Running On Hempty our drops contain Zero THC.

The same as humans, CBD oil interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) this is in all mammal, it is responsible for the regulation of sleep, memory and immunity to disease. During this interaction, CBD and other cannibiniods develop a therapeutic effect, capable of treating ailments like seizures, chronic pain, joint pain, inflammation, anxiety, depression and even insomnia. It’s medical effects have been known for thousands of years in humans, its just been a matter of time before its come into the pet market.

Is it safe?

Like in humans, some doctors/vets question the effectiveness and side effects and because they would prefer scientific evidence and a hard fast dosage they shy away. Other however, are promoting this and encouraging patients and animal owner to try it. CBD oil is considered low risk and safe. Like any new substance you should do your homework and make sure the oil you buy is from a trusted supplier that have third party lab testing, making sure its extracted safely with no pesticides, metals and toxins and THC free. It can have the same very low side effects for some as in humans, too much can cause fatigue, dry mouth and a possible upset tummy. You need to find out the correct dosage but even a lethal overdose would not be a risk. You should chat with your vet if your dog takes any medication, same for humans as CBD could interact with those tablets.

The weight of your dog is very important in finding the right dosage as most methods rely on a number of mailgrams per a certain amount of weight.

In a 10 ml bottle of CBD oil there are 200 drops this means:

  • in a 250 milligram strength bottle there is 1.25 milligrams per drop
  • in a 500 milligram strength bottle there is 2.5 milligrams per drop
  • in a 1000 milligram strength bottle there is 5 milligrams per drop.

For both cats and dogs a good rule of thumb is to start with 1-2 milligrams for every 10 pounds your pet weighs.

For example our dog Dotty is 70 pounds, if we wanted to give her 1mg for very 10 pounds of 250mg strength CBD oil, we should be giving her around 6 drops as 7mg divided by 1.25 is 5.6mg.

If we wanted to instead give her 2 milligrams per 10 pounds of 250mg strength CBD oil we should be giving her around 11 drops as 14mg divided by 1.25 is 11.2.

If we wanted to give her the 500mg strength CBD oil and give her 1 milligram per 10 pounds she should be getting around 3 drops as 7mg divided by 2.5 is 2.8.

here is the math:

For 250mg bottle of CBD oil

  • (if wanting to give your dog 1mg) 1 milligrams for every 10lbs your dog weighs divided by 1.25
  • (if wanting to give your dog 2mg) 2 milligrams for every 10lbs your dog weighs divided by 1.25

For 500mg bottle of CBD oil

  • (if wanting to give your dog 1mg) 1 milligrams for every 10lbs your dog weighs divided by 2.5
  • (if wanting to give your dog 2mg) 2 milligrams for every 10lbs your dog weighs divided by 2.5

The purpose

The dosage will depend on what type of condition you are trying to treat. In general the CBD dosage will be lower if you are using the oil for therapeutic reasons such as anxiety, inflammation, and pain from injury. For medical purposes such as epilepsy or diabetes etc usually CBD is places under the tongue for faster absorption but this can be tricky with pets so putting in into their food is fine.

Mixing medications

This can be dangerous. If your dog currently takes any other medication you must consult with a vet. some medicines have negative interactions with CBD oil. A vet will be able to which is safe to work with CBD oil. Organic CBD is best, it needs to be third party lab tested and free from pesticides, heavy metals and toxins, also check how it is it extracted, C02 extracted is best. This is only a guide and other suppliers may use different guides. You must check the product and consult a vet to check suitability.
