CBD and acne

What causes acne?

Acne is most common in teenagers, particularly when going through puberty, but it can affect people of all ages. It is a skin condition that causes whiteheads, blackheads and pimples as a result of hair follicles on the face and upper body becoming clogged with oil and dead skin.

Causes of acne

The area around the face and upper body have the most oil-producing glands, these oil glands (sebaceous glands) are connected to your hair follicles and can result in acne for four main reasons: –

Excess oil production – The sebaceous glands can overproduce oil (or sebum) giving a greasy look. This can lead to the blocking of the follicles.
Follicles become clogged by oil and dead skin – When the follicles are blocked, they become inflamed and a build-up of dead skin cells occurs. This problem gets progressively worse because more oil and dead skin continue to be produced and can result in cyst-like lumps forming.
Build-up of bacteria – The inability to clear the pores can result in them becoming infected with bacteria, which can worsen inflammation, compounding the problem
Hormones, medication and stress – A number of factors can make acne worse, including androgens, which are hormones released through puberty which cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge, causing blockages. Certain medications and stress have also been demonstrated as causes of worsening acne.
Common myths are that acne can be caused by eating greasy foods and by poor hygiene.

Can CBD oil treat acne?

CBD is thought to stop acne by reducing excess oil production from the oil-producing glands in the skin. This prevents the follicles from becoming clogged by oil which reduces dead skin build-up and consequently stops it from forming in the first instances.

CBD achieves this by exhibiting its anti-inflammatory effects on the oil-producing glands, resulting in a reduction in oil production

Over 90% of the population worldwide suffer from acne at some point in their life. And despite being so common, for some people, it can be a condition that affects their mental health and sociability due to its knock-on effects.

Promising studies have been done but not enough evidence has been documented. There are plenty of anecdotal evidence across the internet strongly backing its use . Many famous faces are saying they are using it for wellness and CBD now comes in many skincare products. We know that hemp seed oil has been clinically proven to help with problem skin , dry , scars , psoriasis and Eczema so it could well be true that CBD also has great potential too . More trials and research is needed. It seems the scientific theory is there it just needs putting on paper and getting it clinically assessed under the right setting to prove its effectiveness.
